Parkland Hockey Academy is proud to be entering its ninth year of operation. It has seen tremendous growth in the number of students/staff and facility usage. We have students attend from two school districts (Parkland and Northern Gateway). We are happy to witness the opportunity able to provide instruction and support to students from their home schools wherever they may be.
The Academy's mission is to support student learning, ice hockey skills (technical and tactical), fitness training, enhancing sport performance, motivation, sports etiquette, and sports psychology. Through a combination of theory and practical exposure to hockey, student/athletes enrolled in the course will learn about the sport and personal development.
The course (Hockey Canada curriculum based) is designed for developing athletes who are interested in gaining knowledge, skills and attitudes that will augment their present participation in hockey. Students are expected to accomplish this learning through the application of practical aspects of performance enhancement through training and by understanding the associated theoretical background. On and off ice testing and comparisons based on Hockey Canada tests/results are conducted twice a year.
Students' class time is divided into on and off ice components. The on ice curriculum allows for students to work on individual (technical) skills such as skating, passing and receiving, puck handling, shooting and checking and moving through to tactical/game situations implementing these skills and knowledge. Off ice, students are given the opportunity to further enhance their on ice skills through deliberate practice activities. They are exposed to different training techniques for pre/in/post season workouts. Classroom sessions are spent looking at mental training activities and special guest presentations.
Students are also exposed to alternate venues activities such as the pool (underwater hockey, water polo), Hit Training centre (specialized personal instruction), Panther Gym (boxing footwork exposure), Aerials gym (gymnastics), golf, etc. On ice, we provide activities such as sledge hockey, broomball, 3vs3 tournaments, etc. The participants appreciate the variety and enjoy trying alternate methods/venues of training.
Hockey Canada's Skill Development Series
This series of DVDs encompasses the many skills, techniques and strategies that have become integral to playing the game of hockey at every level. This four part series will build the foundation for the technical skills of skating, puck control, shooting and scoring and checking. As hockey players begin to refine and master the technical skills of the game they should be introduced to tactical and eventually team play components. To compliment this introductory 4 part technical skills series Hockey Canada has produced a library of DVD's which teach and demonstrate the fundamentals of thinking the game, offensive and defensive tactics, team play and off ice preparation. Take your game to the next level by accessing Hockey Canada's entire DVD library through Breakaway on-line. » Click here to order or to get more information about this DVD series. - Content courtesy of Hockey Canada
