What does it take to make it? » Added: August 27, 2007 I have been asked several times by so many different people in sport; what does a person have to do to make it to the next level? How does a player set himself or herself up for success in the up coming year?
The game has become so much more complicated in the last few years that not only on-ice attributes are measured, but the whole player is now under the microscope. It would be easy for me to say, "Give it your all kid, you will be fine." However, there is so much pressure to "make it;" it has become devastating to the ones who are not as successful in the eyes of their peers.
Now it is important for a player to be coachable, in great physical shape, show leadership, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. But what does it take to make it?
I believe that it comes down to size. You have to have a BIG HEART and you have to have a small head.
There will be times in this game that a players' drive and determination are tested. A player must be able to demonstrate that they possess the heart of a lion. No matter what the situation, all involved in the sport recognize when a player shows that they have the heart to fight another day.
The most difficult part of sport is self-control. Is your head in the right frame of mind for the given situation? Do you possess self-confidence, mental toughness, and responsibility for your play?
All these things come together when you set up the right goals for you as an individual. Be realistic about the challenge you face and if you are unsuccessful in your attempted, show the size of your HEART and the ability to mentally prepare for your next challenge; what ever that may be.
